Are Service Dog Vests Required?
No, service dog vests are not required for public access rights, housing situations, or air travel in the U.S. The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), the FHA (Fair Housing Act) And ACAA (Air Carrier Access Act) all have service dog requirements. But none of them include that the dog must wear a vest.
Service dog vests are totally optional. But, people with disabilities may find their life is easier if their service dogs can be recognized by one as members of the public and staff at businesses. That’s why many people will use a service dog vest, even though it’s not required by ADA law.
