General Definitions
Service Dog: A dog individually trained to help someone with a disability
Emotional Support Animal: An animal that may be a dog or another type of animal that helps someone with comfort or emotional support But is usually not individually trained for a specific disability
Therapy Dog: Someone’s pet that has excellent basic manners & Personality & enjoys visiting different Hoomans in different settings to generally reduce things like anxiety and promote things like joy
There are multiple service dog laws & governing entities for the U.S., including:
- Americans with Disabilities Act – A civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability. Title I – Employment, Titles II & III – Public Services/Accommodations, Title IV – Telecommunications, Title V – Misc.
- Fair Housing Act – Service animals are known as “Assistance Animals” under this Act, and may be animals other than dogs. Applies to virtually all & any housing in the U.S.
- Air Carrier Access Act – Air travel with service dogs
- U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission – The federal agency that was established via the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to administer and enforce civil rights laws against workplace discrimination
- Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 – A national law that protects qualified individuals from discrimination based on disability
