Register As Service Dog – let’s talk about this today.
People who use Service Dogs are using the dog to help with a disability.
Service Dogs don’t need to be registered by any type of governing body in the US… they simply do not.
Q17. Does the ADA require that service animals be certified as service animals?
A. No. Covered entities may not require documentation, such as proof that the animal has been certified, trained, or licensed as a service animal, as a condition for entry.https://www.ada.gov/regs2010/service_animal_qa.html
There are individuals and organizations that sell service animal certification or registration documents online. These documents do not convey any rights under the ADA and the Department of Justice does not recognize them as proof that the dog is a service animal.https://www.ada.gov/regs2010/service_animal_qa.html
*There may be a few exceptions, and one is the City of New York. That particular city requires it’s residents who use service dogs, to register them with the City.
Q20. My city requires me to register my dog as a service animal. Is this legal under the ADA?
A. No. Mandatory registration of service animals is not permissible under the ADA. However, as stated above, service animals are subject to the same licensing and vaccination rules that are applied to all dogs.https://www.ada.gov/regs2010/service_animal_qa.html
Did You Think United States Service Dog Registry Was A Thing?
I hate to break it to you, but United States Service Dog Registry isn’t a legitimate thing.
I am sure you can ‘Google It’ to find a registration service.
But, these online places are just there to take your money. They aren’t legit.
No person or government association of any kind, requires people who use service dogs to register, and/or have their service dog recognizable to the public.
However, if you do make it known, there are some benefits.
Most obviously, it is so that you don’t have to explain to people about the service dog.
This might happen every time you would like to go somewhere regular dogs may not be permitted (sorry for saying ‘regular dogs’ I know NO DOG is regular!)
Because of this, it is helpful for the dog to have some identification such as a vest or tag, which can identify them to members of the public.
No, You Don’t Need To Register A Service Dog
In the US, you do not have to register a service dog, and service animals are protected by the ADA.
